A Sign

I have noticed on several occasions this sign which appears on the many levels of the city’s downtown underground garage: GARAGE IS MONITORED. IN EMERGENCY, STATE LOUDLY AND CLEARLY LOCATION AND CIRCUMSTANCE.

It is always comforting to know that deep within that dimly lit, carbon monoxide-filled underground garage, I am in voice contact with someone who will come to my assistance in case of an emergency. However, before someone will come to assist me, as the sign states in bold letters, I have to STATE LOUDLY AND CLEARLY LOCATION AND CIRCUMSTANCE.

Consider how God is also monitoring us. He knows our every move, and yet it is important that we too are able to STATE LOUDLY AND CLEARLY LOCATION AND CIRCUMSTANCE. It is not that God does not already know these things, but a part of getting help is knowing our location and circumstance, knowing where we are. Half the battle of overcoming a problem is knowing what the problem is.

Walking from that garage into the bright light of day, breathing the fresh air, I began to consider in prayer the things that were concerning me that day. I did as the sign instructed me to do. For the first time I stated my location and circumstances loudly and clearly, not to the garage attendant, but to God. My concerns did not go away, but I felt better, and I had a better idea as to how “we” were going to deal with them now that I knew what they were.
