M25M SHIPS CONTAINER OF AID TO CUBA

Nearly 200,000 Servings of Matthew 25’s Rice/Soy Blend Included in Shipment

JULY 12, 2016  Cincinnati, OH Matthew 25: Ministries, an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization in Cincinnati, OH shipped the first of several containers to Cuba on Tuesday, July 12.

After Fidel Castro successfully implemented a rebellion in Cuba in 1959 that solidified a communist regime, relations with the US became strained and the US placed an embargo on Cuba in 1961.  The US and Cuba reopened embassies in their respective countries on July 20, 2015. Although in recent years the government has been implementing limited economic reforms, Cuba is considered a developing country.

In 2000, Matthew 25 had the unique opportunity to provide supplies to Cuba through a partner in Canada.  The shipment of primarily medical supplies went to a hospital in Havana.  Matthew 25 is working with the same Cuban beneficiary that received the original shipment 16 years ago to ship the current container of aid.  This first container shipped since the re-establishment of diplomatic relations held 36 pallets of aid weighing 34,000 pounds.  The pallets included a mix of children’s and adult’s clothing and 20 pallets (179,000 servings) of Matthew 25’s rice/soy blend.

“We are very excited to re-establish our relationship with this great organization,” says Tim Mettey, CEO of Matthew 25: Ministries. “My father, Reverend Wendell Mettey, felt a deep sympathy with the struggles of the Cuban people and we are looking forward to developing an ongoing relationship with our Cuban partners.”
