Step Right Up

We have had it for a long time. We have gotten on and off of it more times than I can remember. The condition it is in, I do believe, we could market it and make a million. What is it? It is an ordinary bathroom scale!

What is so special and potentially valuable about an ordinary bathroom scale? Well, it will tell you what you want to hear. If you want to be told that you are a few pounds lighter, you just move forward on the scale. Presto! You lose those extra pounds. And if for some strange reason you want to gain a few pounds, move backwards and added pounds you have.

CONSIDER the bathroom scale and think of Apostle Paul’s words to his younger friend Timothy, telling him that the time will come when people will not endure “sound teaching, but will seek out teachers to suit their own liking.”

If we are open to the voice of God, we must realize that it will not always be in harmony with our own thinking. From time to time the voice of God speaks to us and challenges us. At these times, we can either seek out those who will tell us what we want to hear, or examine prayerfully God’s Word. It convicts, but is essential to our spiritual growth, leading us further along the path to the excellent life as can only come with a balance of encouragement and instruction.

Whether it be people, ideas, or a bathroom scale, the people and things which tell us only what we want to hear serve only the moment, which is fleeting and empty. There will come a time when we will step onto the scale of truth and regardless of where we stand, oops, we’ve gained a few too many pounds.
