Matthew 25: Ministries is responding to widespread damage and prolonged power outages caused by a historic series of severe winter storms stretching from New Mexico to New England over the weekend of January 23 – 25. The storms have impacted tens of millions of people across multiple states. At their peak, nearly one million residents were without power as snow and ice—exceeding a foot in many areas—caused power lines to collapse. At least 85 fatalities have been attributed to the storms.
The South experienced rare levels of snow and ice not seen in decades, accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and widespread outages with uncertain timelines for power restoration. Across affected regions, the winter storm system caused major disruptions, including suspended public transportation, thousands of canceled airline flights, extremely hazardous driving conditions, and school closures.
“This was an extremely dangerous storm system that continues to impact areas not accustomed to this level of winter weather, especially ice,” said CEO Tim Mettey. “Our team is working with partners in these areas to assess critical needs and monitor when we can safely gain access to the impacted areas. Our team is ready, and once we are able to deploy, we will provide supplies, comfort, care, and essential services to affected people. We will bring hope to these communities as they begin to dig out from this storm system.”
In collaboration with Procter & Gamble and Walmart, Matthew 25: Ministries deployed our Disaster Response Fleet, including P&G’s Tide Loads of Hope Mobile Laundry Unit and the P&G x Walmart Mobile Shower Unit, to provide essential supplies and services to areas impacted by the storms. Additionally, Matthew 25 deployed the Duracell PowerForward truck, equipped to carry up to 20,000 Duracell batteries as well as on-board charging stations for mobile devices, and trucks stocked with much-needed items such as Cintas First Aid & Safety Kits.
Matthew 25 is shipping truckloads of relief to partners in the impacted areas and will continue to help as long as there is a need.
